New Director of the Greek Institute of Human Genomics (GIHG)

Mr. Panagiotis Deloukas, Professor of Cardiovascular Genomics and Director of the William Harvey Research Institute at the Queen Mary University London, was unanimously elected Director of the Greek Institute of Human Genomics (GIHG), on June 4, 2024.

The election was conducted by a seven-member Evaluation Committee appointed by the Ministry of Development chaired by Professor Nikos Kirpidis, Bio scientist, DOE Joint Genome Institute USA.

Short CV

Panos Deloukas has been Chair of Cardiovascular Genomics since 2013 and Director of the William Harvey Research Institute since 2020 at the Queen Mary University of London (QMUL). He has been a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (UK) since 2018.

He has authored over 532 publications (H-index 189) and is listed by Thomson Reuters among the 1% highly cited researchers in Molecular Biology & Genetics since 2012. In 2024 Edition of Research.com for Best Scientists in the field of Genetics, he was ranked #16 in the world.

Deloukas is a world leader in complex trait genetics, investigating the molecular basis of cardio-metabolic traits. He co-leads global consortia in common disease genetics (CARDIoGRAMplusC4D, GLGC, GIANT) having identified many of the loci underpinning lipid levels and coronary heart disease.

He joined the Sanger Centre in 1994 where he set up a high-throughput pipeline for radiation hybrid mapping, leading an effort to map 30,000 gene markers, GeneMap98. Panos was an active member of the Human Genome Project coordinating the sequencing and analysis of chromosomes 10 and 20.

He has been a member of the Steering Committee of the Global Lipids Genetic Consortium since 2010 and a Member of the Steering Committee and Co-chair of the lipids working group of the UK Biobank CardioΜetabolic Consortium.

He has been the Director of William Harvey Research Institute one of the leading centres in the United Kingdom for pharmacological research, since 1/10/2020.
