Prof. Alexandros Stamatakis, head of the Biodiversity Computing Group (BCG) at the Institute of Computer Science (ICS) of FORTH, and Prof. Athanasios Nenes, Affiliated Scientist at the Institute of Chemical Engineering Sciences (ICE-HT) of FORTH are included in the internationally recognized list of “Highly Cited Researchers” for 2025, compiled by Clarivate Analytics based on the “Web of Science” database.This list is published annually and highlights scientists whose publications consistently rank among the most frequently cited worldwide (top 1%), and represents an important honorary distinction. Of the world’s population of scientists, Highly Cited Researchers who have demonstrated significant and broad influence in their fields of research are 1 in 1,000.

RECLAIM’s participation in Greece’s leading environmental, Verde.Tec, which took place on 21-23 February 2025 at the MEC Exhibition Centre in Paiania, was a great success.

A research team from the Technical University of Crete, the Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU), and the Institute of Computer Science (ICS) of the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH) won the 1st place award in an international emotion recognition challenge using electroencephalography (EEG).

Professor Dimitris Fotiadis, affiliated Researcher at Biomedical Research Institute (BRI) of the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas, has been appointed as an EMBS Distinguished Lecturer for 2025.

Nektarios Tavernarakis, Prof. of the Medical School of the University of Crete and Chair of FORTH, was unanimously elected President of the European Molecular Biology Conference (EMBC), for a four-year term starting in January 2025. He is the first Greek to hold this position.

Dr. Maria Charisi, Associated Research Fellow at the Institute of Astrophysics of the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (IA-FORTH) and Assistant Professor at Washington State University, in the USA, has been awarded the 2024 L'ORÉAL-UNESCO Greek Award for Women in Science, in the field of Natural Sciences.

This honorary distinction is a significant recognition of Prof. Charmandaris' outstanding scientific accomplishments and contribution to education.

Dr. John Vontas, Director of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB) of FORTH and Professor of the Agricultural University of Athens (AUA), along with Dr. Christos Delidakis, Principal Investigator at IMBB and Professor at the University of Crete, were elected as new members of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO).

Professor Nektarios Tavernarakis stood out among a large number of extremely high-caliber Greek scientists from Universities and Research Centers, worldwide.

Panagiotis N. Moschou, Researcher at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB) of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) and Associate Professor at the Department of Biology, University of Crete is awarded a Consolidator Grant from the European Research Council (ERC).
