Significant distinction for Prof. Athanasios Nenes, Affiliate Researcher at the Institute of Chemical Engineering Sciences (FORTH/ICE-HT)

Prof. Athanasios Nenes, Affiliated Researcher at ICEHT/FORTH and Professor of Atmospheric Processes at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, has been invited as an expert for the Scoping meeting of the 7th Assessment of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that will define the chapters and the content of this critical assessment. Nenes is one of the 230 experts to participate in this event (that takes place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 9-13 December) whο altogether cover all activities of the report that will be put together over the next 5 years. He is acting as an expert in Working Group I: The Physical Science Basis, which examines the physical science underpinning past, present, and future climate change.

Prof. Nenes is the Director of the Laboratory of Atmospheric Processes and their Impacts (LAPI) at the EPFL (Switzerland), and ICE-HT/FORTH, and co-coordinator of the Center of Studies on Air Quality and Climate Change (C-STACC), which is part of the Institute of Chemical Engineering Sciences of FORTH.

It was founded in 1988 by the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Environment Programme. It is the key institution assessing the state and evolution of the climate and the factors driving global and climate change, and their impacts in ecosystems, health and society. IPCC was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007, jointly with Albert Arnold (Al) Gore Jr., for their contributions to Climate Science.
