Commencement of the Construction of FORTH’s New Building Facilities in Heraklion, Rethymno and Chania

The Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH) held two open events: on Friday June 14th, at its headquarters in Heraklion, and on Saturday, June 15th 2024, at the TUC Campus in Chania, for the presentation of its new building facilities in Heraklion, Rethymno and Chania. This significant development project, which is co-financed by the Recovery and Resilience Fund and the European Investment Bank through the National Public Investment Program, is expected to play a decisive role in the development of FORTH, as well as, contribute to research and academic education in the Region of Crete.

Official addresses were given, in Heraklion, by the Regional Governor of Crete, Mr. Stavros Arnaoutakis, and in Chania, by the Vice-Regional Governor of Chania, Mr. Nikolaos Kalogeris, the Mayor of Chania, Mr. Panagiotis Simandirakis, the General Secretary for Research and Innovation, Prof. Athanasios Kyriazis and the Rector of the Technical University of Crete Prof. Michalis Zervakis. The event in Chania was also attended by Mr. Alexandros Markogiannakis, Member of the Hellenic Parliament.

The President of FORTH, Prof. Nektarios Tavernarakis, presented its role in the National and European research ecosystem.

The Director of FORTH’s Institute of Geoenergy, Mr. Ioannis Gentekakis, Professor of the Technical University of Crete presented the activities of the Institute.

Dr. George Papamichail, Director of the Science and Technology Park of Crete and President & CEO of the Managing Company of STEP-C, presented its role in the utilization of research and the support of entrepreneurship.

Afterwards, Mr. Evangelos Harkoutsakis, Director of the Technical Service of FORTH made a historical review that led to the signing of the contracts.

The events were concluded with the signing of the contracts with the contractors: EKTER S.A., for the building construction in Heraklion and Rethymno and DRAKAKIS S.A, for the construction project in Chania.

The project is implemented within the framework of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0”, funded by the European Union - Next GenerationEU.
