George Kiriakidis, Professor of the Department of Physics of the University of Crete and Head of the TCM research group at the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL) of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), has been unanimously elected as the President of the European Materials Research Society (E-MRS) for the period 2017-2019. Prof. Kiriakidis has served as vice-President of the E-MRS for the last four years. It is the first time that a Greek materials scientist is voted in the E-MRS leadership.

Dr. Ioannis Talianidis, Research Director at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of FORTH, was elected Director of the Institute on June 6, 2017. His official appointment is expected in the next few weeks.

Nektarios Tavernarakis, the Chairman of the Board of Directors at the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH), and Professor at the Medical School of the University of Crete was awarded the Galien Scientific Research Award at a ceremony that took place on April 1st, under the auspices of the President of the Hellenic Republic Mr. Prokopios Pavlopoulos, at Megaron, the Athens Concert Hall.

Project MedSTACH aims to establish Cyprus as an excellence hub in archaeology and cultural heritage in the Eastern Mediterranean region, capitalising on multidisciplinary research and technological innovation. To this end, key Cypriot public academic institutions and national policy makers and stakeholders are teaming up with leading international research and academic institutions to lay the groundwork towards creating the Eastern Mediterranean Science and Technology Centre for Archaeology and Cultural Heritage (acronym MedSTACH).

Charalambos Makridakis’s research is focused on Computational Mathematics, mainly in the areas of Numerical Methods for Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations and of Multi-Scale Modelling and Simulation. He is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Sussex and Professor of Numerical Analysis at the University of Crete.
