Until now, Europe has had two major collaborative networks for ground-based astronomy, one in the optical domain (OPTICON) and the other in the radio-wave domain (RadioNet). These two networks, having successfully served their respective communities over the past twenty years, now come together to form Europe’s largest ground-based astronomy collaborative network. In Greece the network includes the Institute of Astrophysics FORTH and the National Observatory of Athens. During the ORP kick-off meeting on Tuesday 23 March 2021, the Director of the Institute of Astrophysics, Prof. Vassilis Charmandaris, was unanimously elected as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of the network, having served as Chair of the Board of Directors of the OPTICON network for the past 2 years. The project is coordinated by CNRS (France), together with the University of Cambridge (UK) and the Max-Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy (MPIfR) (Germany) and it involves astronomers from 15 European countries, Australia and South Africa, amounting to 37 institutions.

On March 23, 2021, a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between HHRM and IPR in areas related to the detection and extraction of hydrocarbons.

The Foundation for Research and Technology (FORTH) provides infrastructure for information and telecommunication services to support the research and administrative activities of the Foundation. Providing this infrastructure imposes the responsible, ethical and legal use thereof by the Foundation community members.

On 2 September 2020, an executive delegation from the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) toured the premises of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) in Heraklion, Crete to advance research collaboration in cybersecurity.

Prof. Gelina Harlaftis, Director of the Institute for Mediterranean Studies of FORTH and head of the Centre of Maritime History was awarded the Efkranti prize for the international promotion of Greek Shipping, at the Benaki Museum, on 22 July 2019.

The EU Research and Innovation magazine Horizon featured the ERC project PyroTRACH that is hosted by the Center for Studies of Air Quality and Climate Change (C-STACC) of the Institute for Chemical Engineering Sciences (ICE-HT) @ FORTH in Patras.

The Institute of Computer Science and the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of the Foundation for Research and Technology (FORTH) participate in the “National Network for Genetic Cardiovascular Diseases Study And Prevention Of Sudden Death In The Young On The Basis Of Precision Medicine” that is funded by the General Secretariat for Research and Technology through public funds. The Network started its operation in July 2019 and has a duration of 2 years.

During the 1st phase of the Global Talent Mentoring programme, 159 students from Greece and Cyprus expressed their interest to participate as mentees. Initially, FORTH had estimated the nomination of 50 mentee candidates from both countries. However, due to the high quality of applications, FORTH ended up nominating 74 students, 42 boys and 32 girls. The reaction of Global Talent Mentoring shows the impact of the programme among Greek students. “We send a very enthusiastic “thank you” to the FORTH team for sending us so many truly amazing nominees! Our team was extremely impressed to see what some of the students are working on”.
