Call for Applications: CHAngeing Entrepreneurial Programme
The CHAngeing project invites students, researchers, healthcare professionals, and early-stage entrepreneurs to apply for the CHAngeing Entrepreneurial Programme, a fully online, 4-week (October 6–31, 2025) intensive course focused on driving innovation in health and active ageing.
The Science and Technology Park of Crete of FORTH is certified with ISO 9001:2015
The Science and Technology Park of Crete (STEP-C) of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) and the Managing Company of the Science & Technology Park of Crete (EDAP STEP-C S.A.), in the context of their ongoing efforts to provide high-quality services to businesses, partners, and the research community, have successfully obtained ISO 9001:2015 certification. The certificate was awarded to the Director of STEP-C, President & CEO of EDAP STEP-C S.A., Dr. George Papamichail, by the CEO of TÜV NORD Hellas, Ms. Vasiliki Kazazi, in the presence of the President of FORTH, Prof. Vassilis Charmandaris, and Ms. Uxue Azpiroz, Director of the TÜV NORD Hellas office in Crete.
Visit of the German Ambassador, Mr. Andreas Kindl, to the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH)
On Monday, May 26, 2025, the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Greece, Mr. Andreas Kindl, visited the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), accompanied by Dr. George Kaloutsakis, Honorary Consul of Germany in Heraklion. They met with the President of FORTH, Professor Vassilis Charmandaris, the Vice President Professor Dimitris Plexousakis, Directors of the Institutes and Heads of Special Units of FORTH. They were informed in detail about the Foundation’s research activities and its long-standing collaborations with major academic and research institutions in Germany.
Award for the team “InnoGo” of the Technical University of Crete in the international competition EUSAIR POPRI Youth 2025
The competition was held this year on 6 and 7 May in Georgioupolis, Chania, coordinated by the Science and Technology Park of Crete (STEP-C) of the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH), in collaboration with the Innovative Business Observatory (IBO) of the Region of Crete. STEP-C has been a long-standing participant in the EUSAIR POPRI Youth initiative, in the framework of its cooperation with Primorski Tehnološki Park in Slovenia, while this year it also took on the coordination of the Greek participation.
NASA's IXPE Solves Mystery of X-Ray Creation in Black Holes
Recent publication in Astrophysical Journal Letters: New findings by an international team of astrophysicists, based on data collected by IXPE, have revealed the mechanism that creates the bright X-ray radiation, which is associated with the extremely powerful plasma jets that erupt from supermassive black holes.

FORTH accepts proposals for the Award for Excellence in Academic Teaching in memory of B. Xanthopoulos-St. Pnevmatikos 2025
FORTH announces the 34rt call for the Award for Excellence in Academic Teaching in memory of Basilis Xanthopoulos and Stephanos Pnevmatikos. For 2025, proposals that fall under the thematic cycle of Social Sciences and Humanities are accepted.
The closing date is Friday 18 July 2025.
The Contribution of FORTH’s Friends Association in promoting the research activities of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH)
The FORTH’s Friends Association was established in 2018, on the initiative of its President, philologist Professor Mr. Zacharias Karatarakis. The Association is governed by a 7-member Board of Directors with a four-year term. Since its founding, the Association established two annual awards, of 3,000 euros each:
A. The Miltiadis Karatzis Award and Β. The Heraklion Chamber of Commerce Award. These prizes are still awarded today to young researchers (PhD candidates, PhDs, Postdoctoral researchers) working in collaboration with FORTH. The winners are selected by a special committee set up for this purpose and the prizes are awarded during events that are open to the public and are organized twice a year.
Prestigious HFSP Research Grant Awarded to IMBB Researcher, Dr. Michail Kotsyfakis
Dr. Michail Kotsyfakis has been awarded a prestigious Research Grant from the 2025 Human Frontiers Science Program (HFSP) to investigate the eco-epidemiological dynamics of tick-borne pathogens, particularly the Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever Virus (CCHFV). The awarded project will receive $1.5 million in funding over three years.
